MARCH 2-4, 2020 • INTERCONTINENTAL LOS ANGELES DOWNTOWN

Presented by

The Carbon Issue

Architecture 2030 guest edited the January 2020 issue of ARCHITECT Magazine. The Carbon Issue is dedicated to the urgent need for climate action, with decarbonization strategies for materials, design, practice, and policy.

The Carbon Issue

Implementing Rapid and Dramatic Carbon Reductions in the Global Built Environment

The CarbonPositive’20 CONFERENCE and EXPO provided a how-to for planning, designing, building and manufacturing a CarbonPositive future – where buildings, developments and entire cities are constructed to use sustainable resources, generate surplus renewable energy, and convert atmospheric carbon into durable materials and products.

To meet this challenge, sessions, speakers and exhibitors showcased in-depth innovative materials and advanced construction methods, latest design tools and best practices, and leading edge policy efforts and planning practices.

Sessions

Day 1

Opening Keynote:
Timing is Everything: The Path to CarbonPositive

The climate emergency requires us to act now. Architecture 2030 Founder and CEO Edward Mazria framed the challenges of the building sector now and over the next 30 years, identified the critical interim and long term carbon targets, and showed how we begin to address them through planning and policy, design and practice, building and manufacturing.

Keynote: It’s Electrifying! Achieving ZERO Now Through Electrification and Renewables

Cole Roberts highlighted the futures of energy and electricity, and Panama Batholomy made a strong case against the continued use of natural gas.

Keynote: Network for Change: The Global Embodied Carbon Movement

Kate Simonen brought embodied carbon advocates onstage to show the strength of the local, people-powered initiatives that have sprung up to take on the challenge of reducing embodied carbon, and stressed the importance of bringing new people into the movement.

Day 2

Introductory Remarks: AIA Address

Jane Frederick, AIA and Robert Ivy, FAIA

Keynote: Spotlight on the Global South: CarbonPositive Design Tools for Global Markets

Over the next 30 years, the majority of the world’s building construction will occur in cities in the Global South. Prashant Kapoor shared approaches and instruments of practice that will be most effective in realizing better performing and low carbon buildings in emerging markets.

Breakout Sessions

  • Cities Lead: Emerging Embodied Carbon Codes and Incentives
  • Core Materials: Better Concrete, Better Steel
  • Don’t be Square: Circular Economy as Design and Business Strategy

Breakout Sessions

  • Forest AND the Trees: Getting Mass Timber Right
  • Lighten Up! Optimizing Materials Use in Structures
  • Landing It: Carbon Sequestration in Site Planning and Landscape Design

Keynote: Towards Half – Designing for a Carbon Positive Future

MASS Design Group’s Kigali office is increasingly responsible for some of the world’s leading climate positive buildings and large scale developments. To realize a more sustainable future, Kelly Alvarez Doran and Sierra Bainbridge show how might we begin to reconsider our approach to materiality, supply chains, labor forces, and the fundamentals of design practice.

Breakout Sessions

  • Put A Ring on It: The Power of Commitments
  • Next Gen Biomaterials: Innovation and Promise
  • In Practice: Carbon Sequestering Concrete in Los Angeles

Breakout Sessions

  • Big Zero: Large Scale Carbon Positive Projects
  • Interior Dialogue: Material Impact and Innovation
  • EC3: Transforming Construction Specification and Procurement

Day 3

Morning Keynote:
2030 is the New 2050: How to Speed Delivery on Global Promises Now

The next 10 years are critical to the global climate movement. How far behind are we on delivering on the promise of the Paris Agreement? Farhana Yamin, Founder of Track 0, shared why the building sector poised to make a difference, how we can take action in our cities and local communities, and how we can best support immediate and impactful actions and policies on the international stage.

AIA Large Firm Roundtable’s Countdown on Carbon
