SEPTEMBER 26-27, 2019 • KIMPTON GRAY CHICAGO • CHICAGO, IL

Presented by

Accelerating the transition to carbon positive infrastructure, buildings, and materials.

The CarbonPositive’19 SUMMIT convened the leadership of the world’s most influential architecture, engineering and construction firms to establish a collective plan of action for addressing the environmental risks of unprecedented global construction and urbanization over the next four decades. This event focused on empowering the collaborations that will reorient and mobilize practice, policy and market demand to dramatically and rapidly reduce embodied carbon emissions in the global built environment.

The CarbonPositive’19 SUMMIT created the momentum for the CarbonPositive’20 CONFERENCE and Expo, which will explore how to plan, design, build, and manufacture a Carbon Positive future.

Sessions

Day 1

Opening Keynote:
CarbonPositive – The New Imperative

Architecture 2030 Founder and CEO Edward Mazria framed the new imperative and opportunity for the building profession to lead an immediate global response to embodied carbon, creating carbon positive built environments.

Speed Round: Innovation in Core Materials

Experts shared design opportunities and material innovations for dramatically reducing embodied carbon in a small but very influential set of materials – that that comprise building structure and urban infrastructure.

Workshop: Guiding CarbonPositive Design and Construction

In arranged groups, participants developed high-impact and scalable design and construction guidance for the immediate, near, and long term.

Panel: Urban Environments, Densification, and Building Reuse

Urban planning strategies, adaptive reuse and smart urban infill are effective in mitigating embodied carbon associated with new construction and development. Presentations followed by a panel discussion with Q&A explored best practices, material strategies, and policy incentives.

Day 2

Morning Keynote:
Scaling Impact

Prashant Kapoor, Chief Industry Specialist for Green Buildings and Climate Smart Cities, shared lessons from creating IFC’s visionary Edge App and how to align significant sustainability gains with governments and markets at the global scale.

Panel: Innovation in Envelope Materials

Aluminum, glass and insulation play a major role in a building’s performance and its embodied carbon footprint. Expert panel with Q&A explored how to win on both fronts.

Speed Round: CarbonPositive Design and Policy Tools

Presentations focused on the relative efficacy of emerging tools and policies for implementation, and their ability to scale quickly and globally.

Workshop: Advancing CarbonPositive Policy in Practice

In arranged groups, participants outlined strategies for advancing and implementing the best tools in practice, policy, and regulation.

Call to Action

Targets established will be integrated into the American Institute of Architects’ “AIA 2030 Commitment” (representing 625 firms) including reporting on embodied carbon emissions, and the newly launched Structural Engineers 2050 Challenge (SE 2050) will provide aligned commitments, reporting, and actions for achieving the targets.
